Where Are We Now is inspired by a doina I learned in Maramures, Transylvania on a research trip in June'23. Played or rather gifted to me and my fellow adventurers at the time by an incredible fiddler Vasile Rus “Poștașul” (the postman).  Using live electronics to process my cello I took the doina in an unknown and exploratory direction giving space to ponder in the present. When this track was recorded (originally live on Soho Radio for Raimund Wong's 'A Record of Living Beings' show in July 2023) and subsequently tinkered with in my studio, I imaged myself in the middle of our post-pandemic paradoxical and uncertain world. Now with the escalation and turmoil of the Israel/Gaza conflict, the unstable economics of the UK and Brexit perplexities I feel it is more important than ever to take a step back, take stock, get lost in the flurry of the crazy and breathe. I hope this doina aids that process for all listeners.
